July 4, 2021 We Reflect on Last 245 Years
Al Ritter
As we look back on the last 245 years it seems amazing
to me the liberty and freedom we have lost since the signing of the Declaration
of Independence. Imagine if you will the basis of severing ties with England.
The basis of declaring our sovereignty from England
was based on taxation. Another war was fought on that same idea between the
North and South, but that is a story for another time.
America had no say in a government that was blindly
based 3500 miles from Philadelphia, PA. Governors were appointed by the Crown
and sent to the new colonies to administer their English rule and collect
taxes.
This idea of colonialism was nothing new for England
and Spain and seemed to run rampant for centuries. It was a small group of 56
men that signed the Declaration of Independence that finally put there foot
down and claimed sovereignty on this new land.
Nine of the 56 died of wounds in the Revolutionary War.
Five more were captured or imprisoned. Countless wives, and children were
either killed mistreated, or left penniless.
Twelve of the signer’s houses were burned to the
ground in retribution.
Seventeen lost everything they owned.
Not ONE of them defected!
I only wished that today’s Congress shared the same
principles!
